I Remember When……

It’s an odd thing to remember when certain celebrities die. I’m too young to have been around when Kennedy died (both), I do remember where I was when Elvis died, I was living in Florida and all of the adults in the community got drunk and played his music.

When Julia died I was walking down Post Street in San Francisco with my son and there in The Gump’s window was a large solitary picture of her with birth/death date. This was how I found out. I didn’t considered myself a foodie then; much like JC who claims she didn’t learn about food until she was 32, she only ate to live. For some reason this women that I knew very little about truly touched my heart.

A few years later someone pointed out that I spent quite a lot of time in specialty markets, restaurants and dating chefs and restaurant owners. One very significant other cooked for JC’s 85th birthday and many chef’s I’ve met have worked with her. Jeremiah Tower, when he owned STARS would tell me fascinating stories about how naturally funny she was. Jeremiah can spin a tale, but it was fun to hear.

Recently I began to pack for a move and realized I have over 100+ cookbooks. Many are signed and many are first editions. While I haven’t put them to terrific use, I do plan on studying them and sharing with others via this blog.I would also like to hear from others who have a recipe, story or passion for all things food.

Celebrating Julia

This is a special forum to celebrate the patron Saint of American cuisine, Julia child. Mrs. Child brought French technique to Americans at a time when they were besotted by Green Jello, Frozen TV dinners and Margarine. Through her efforts with the book “Mastering The Art of French Cooking” and as the first major TV “Celebrity Chef” America sat up and took notice.

She is forever the standard to aspire to; this blog celebrates Julia and the current state of great American food.
